An 8.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia on Wednesday,11th April 2012. Earthquake occurred 500 km out of the coast of Sumatra forcing the people to move out of there buildings and houses to open spaces.Fear of a huge Tsunami was felt by the people of Indonesia which had witnessed ever destructive Tsunami in 2004 taking thousands of life. But there are no reports of any kind of damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful quake was centered 20 miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor around 308 miles (495 kilometers) from Aceh’s provincial capital.
Aceh province is the same place where Tsunami waves killed 170000 people in 2004.
There was a certain panic situation in the Aceh province which reminded them with the horrors of 2004.
A second massive earthquake (aftershock) occurred a few hours later.
Mild tremors felt in Chennai, Kolkata and Guwahati and Bangalore in India after earthquake in Indonesia.
Immediately after the earthquake Tsunami alert was declared in many countries including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.
People were evacuated from Marina Beach in Chennai in India.
Current Status: There are very less chances for a Tsunami Wave and many countries has cancelled the Tsunami high alert including India and Indonesia.
Tension has been eased out in area’s of Aceh Province and Indonesia.
A continuous check is maintained for any new development in Indian Ocean Region.
